County Tipperary is situated across Ireland's central plain, it is the country's largest landlocked county. Tipperary's center is known as the Golden Vale, a rich landscape of rolling pastureland that is a prime location for dairy farming. While it covers three counties, the majority of it lies in Tipperay. This pastoral stretch of land is situated in the basin of the River Suir, which meanders through the county from north to south. One of the most popular attractions in the south is the historic Rock of Cashel, which was the traditional seat of the Kings of Munster. On the northern border is Lough Derg, a long narrow lake that is the third largest in Ireland, which empties into the River Shannon. At the point where the two meet The lake is popular for sailing and fishing. It is also ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and windsurfing.

With such a fitting landscape for golf, it is no surprise that there are 11 courses throughout the county. Thurles Golf Club is one of the most popular. The undulating parkland course incorporates the River Suir, creating one of the most challenging golf courses in Ireland.
