The dramatic geography of County Monaghan includes mountains, lakes, rivers, and forests. The unspoiled landscape remains one of Ireland's best-kept secrets for fishing, hiking, and biking. In addition to the abundance of outdoor activities available, the county's idyllic towns and villages offer plenty of history and culture. The town of Carrickmacross is known worldwide for its unique and beautiful lace-making technique that originated in the 1820s and has graced the wedding dresses of both Princess Diana and Kate Middleton. The town of Monaghan, after which the county is named, lies in the north. A walk through the town offers a look at the historic architecture, including two landmark buildings from the 17th century, Aviemore House and Market House.

Rossmore Golf Club, a championship course with a beautiful setting, is also in Monaghan. In the town of Castleblayney is one of the county's newer golf courses. Opened in 2008, Concrawood Castleblayney Golf Club has quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest in Europe. The rolling parkland layout is intertwined with Lough Muckno. Eleven of the course's holes bring you treacherously close to the water's edge.
