Lough Allen, the uppermost and largest lake on the River Shannon, divides the mountainous northwest and the flatter southeast of County Leitrim. The county boasts a natural beauty rich with deep valleys nestled between towering mountains that fade into rolling hills. Being the least densely populated county in Ireland has ensured that its tranquility remains undisturbed. Leitrim is famously known for its large lakes and many rivers including Lough Melvin, Lough Gill, and the Drowes River, which is the first known salmon river. The abundance of water provides exciting kayaking and canoeing adventures and the northwest is great for scenic walks through limestone hills. Leitrim is also home to two golf courses, Ballinamore Golf Club and Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club. The nine-hole Ballinamore sits alongside the Shannon Erne Waterway, Europe's longest inland navigable waterway. The Carrick-on-Shannon course combines mature parkland with 12 acres of marshland. The layout features eight holes that are surrounded by water. There are also dramatic elevation changes provided by the tumbling landscape. The highest point on the course boasts panoramic views of Boyle River, Drumharlow Lake, and Arigna Mountains. Find your next tee time at golf courses in County Leitrim today.
