Maui Nui Golf Club (formerly Elleair Maui Golf Club) in Kihei, Hawaii is located just off of Highway 31, about five minutes from town. It s a favorite of local and holiday golfers looking for an affordable tee time that provides good value. You ll be hard pressed to find a course on Maui that s friendlier or that gives you as much bang for your buck. Designed by Bill Newis in 1987, Maui Nui Golf Club is a very playable, varied layout that, while not on the ocean, provides splendid ocean views. Over the years, the course has appeared on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in Hawaii. The par-71 layout features four sets of tee markers that provide distance options spaced out judiciously from 5,321 yards to 6,665 yards. Maui Nui Golf Club s holes come in all shapes and sizes and ramble in a multitude of different directions. The island s trade winds add a key strategic element to the game and dramatically influence how the holes play. Newis took the winds, which usually crop up in the morning and late afternoons, into account when he laid out the course. The round at Maui Nui Golf Club starts formidably. Both the 1st and 2nd holes are the longest par 4s and par 5s of the day. Though the par-3 3rd provides a let up, by the time players walk off the 4th hole they ve played the toughest three holes on the front nine. One of the nice things about the front nine is that there are no houses around. When the routing shifts to the other side of the clubhouse, housing begins lining a few of the fairways. Nonetheless, Maui Nui Golf Club s fairways are generous and tree-lined and the houses are set back from the action. For the most part, this is a course where you can relax in a natural setting as you take in views not only of the Pacific Ocean and the Auau Channel, but also of Mount Haleakala, Molokini, and the West Maui Mountains. Players of wide-ranging abilities find the layout s challenges quite manageable. The landing areas and bailout areas are generous, the few water hazards are not situated in intimidating locations, and the greens are large and inviting. Since the course only receives about 10 inches of rain a year, you can almost assuredly count on sunny weather. Practice facilities at Maui Sui Golf Club include a full-length driving range that offers TopTracer technology, a chipping area with a sand bunker, and a putting green. The clubhouse is home to a pro shop and a full restaurant and bar with outdoor seating. It s a prime spot to toast your round. Maui Nui Golf Club may not be written about in major golf magazines, but it s a hidden bargain gem well worth a look on Maui.
