Augusta National Golf Club may be beloved by the patrons who attend the Masters and everyone who sees it on television each year, but when it comes to actually playing in Augusta, Georgia, public golfers pour out their love for Forest Hills Golf Club. Known for its affordable tee times, this 18-hole championship course has not only appeared on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in Georgia and been a regular selection for "Best Public Golf Course" by Augusta Magazine, it also boasts its own extraordinary history. Donald Ross laid out Forest Hills Golf Club in 1926 as the chief amenity of a new luxury resort hotel, the Forest Hills-Ricker Hotel, that famously attracted elite northerners in winter. In 1930, the year of his famous Grand Slam, the great Bobby Jones kick-started his season by winning the prestigious Southeastern Open hosted jointly by Forest Hills Golf Club and Augusta Country Club. Since 1979, Forest Hills Golf Club has been the home course of the illustrious Augusta State University golf teams. Arnold Palmer s design team redesigned the course in 2004, and over the decades so many of the collegiate players who have gone on to the pro tours have played this stunning parkland layout. You don t need to be an accomplished golfer to enjoy Forest Hills Golf Club. The playing field, which rambles on rolling terrain, features a nice variety of holes with wide fairways lined by majestic Georgia pine trees. Water enters the fray on just two holes both of the par 3s on the back nine. The main trouble most players find at Forest Hills Golf Club is short-siding themselves by the greens. The slick TifEagle putting surfaces are quite undulating and come in all shapes and sizes. With five sets of tees that extend from 5,0908 yards to 7,140 yards, Forest Hills Golf Club has a fun and manageable distance for players of diverse skill levels. Even with the hills, walking is quite prevalent here. Practice facilities include a driving range, a sand bunker, and a large putting green. The clubhouse features a pro shop with a wide selection of merchandise and a grille restaurant open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Since you probably won t be able to play Augusta National, do the next best thing and book a tee time at historic Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
