Avila Beach Golf Resort, which calls itself the best known of the layouts on California s Central Coast, is a championship playing field and a favorite site for outings and events. Located three miles off of Highway 101 between San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach, this unique playing field dates back to 1969 when Olin Dutra and Desmond Muirhead laid it out just a few hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean. Despite its position on the edge of a bay, you ll hear the sea more than you ll see it. Only two holes at Avila Beach Golf Resort the 10th and the 18th provide glimpses of the Pacific. The front nine delves into the foothills as it rambles amidst a coastal canyon and valley. Tall oak trees line the fairways. You ll encounter some significant elevation changes on the up and down terrain. Meanwhile, the back nine winds around a tidal estuary. Most players who frequent Avila Beach Golf Resort laud its character-filled variety, its scenery, and fun and challenging holes. This par-72 track has three sets of tee markers. The forward tees play at 4,854 yards, the middle markers measure 6,090 yards, and the back tees extend to 6,557 yards. The tips are well suited for proficient players looking for a formidable test. Avila Beach Golf Resort is a shotmaker s course with no two holes alike. Some holes play open and invite grip-it-and-rip-it swings, while others are all about keeping the ball in play. You ll find exciting forced-carry shots over the estuary, a drivable par 4, a number of attractive doglegs, and difficult par 3s. Avila Beach Golf Resort is an old-style course where local knowledge really helps. The fast, elevated greens are small on the front nine and larger and multi-tiered on the back nine. The putting surfaces feature pronounced slopes and a considerable amount of break, and downhill putts often run away quickly. Avila Beach Golf Resort has a driving range with grass teeing areas. Players are welcome to practice putts, chips and pitches on a large two-tiered practice green that boasts a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. Avila Beach Golf Resort's clubhouse is home to a pro shop and a bar & grill that has long been a popular local hangout. Be sure to check for events when making your tee time, as holes 10 and 18 often are closed for play on days when there's an event.
