Marshall Canyon Golf Course is one of the best courses operated by Los Angeles County. Located in La Verne, some 35 miles northeast of Los Angeles, this short, sporty layout offers a true escape. Set amidst foothills and surrounded by mountains, Marshall Canyon Golf Course rambles almost entirely free of housing. Lined by pine and eucalyptus trees, the course is a haven for wildlife and a great option for players who like to walk. When you have a tee time to play here you ll not only see lots of deer, but you also may see bobcats, foxes, coyotes, and maybe even a bear. The golf is impressive also, for Marshall Canyon Golf Course is not a cookie-cutter muni. The par 71 test features four sets of tees. While there s not a lot of difference between the 6,145 blue markers and the 5,908 whites, the gap is sizable between the 5,559-yard red markers and the 4,369-yard yellow markers. Many players say that Marshall Canyon Golf Course is more challenging than they were expecting. The playing field, which dates back to 1966, was built into the side of a hill. The fairways are wide, but you can expect lots of sidehill lies and stances. Because of the slope of the terrain, balls that hit on the lower portions of the fairways often trail off to the rough or, if mishit, into the trees and thicker vegetation. Marshall Canyon Golf Course boasts an exciting collection of par 3s that call for shots over ravines. There are only three par 5s and they are all present scoring opportunities, as the longest tops out at only 482 yards. The greens at Marshall Canyon Golf Course are considered a strength of the course. They are fast and tough to read with lots of slope. Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area and putting green. The clubhouse features a golf shop and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, but the offerings in both are rather rudimentary. If you are looking for a cool and tranquil place to play at an affordable price in LA County, consider a tee time at Marshall Canyon Golf Course.
