One of Nova Scotia?s best kept secrets, The Amherst Golf Club offers a stellar golf course with a great history and even better present and future. The course first opened as nine holes in 1909 and was designed by Fred Richwood who worked with the famous Harry Vardon. From 1967 to 1970, prolific Canadian architect C.E. ?Robbie? Robinson, who began his career working under the great Stanley Thompson, redesigned the course and expanded it to 18 holes. The par-71 layout, which is set near the Tantramar Marsh, plays just a little more than 6,400 yards from the back tees, and it?s plenty challenging. This classic layout actually begins with the hardest and longest hole on the course. Get past the 600-yard, double dogleg par-5 first without any damage, and you?ve got a chance at a great round. The first hole is heavily tree-lined, as is much of the course, with some subtle doglegs, and of course, plenty of length. There are some elevated tees, a smattering of bunkers, and undulated greens. Water doesn?t come into play often, but it does on the 15th, a 155-yard par-3 that plays over a pond. There is also a pond in front of the green on the difficult par-5 18th. In addition to the golf course, Amherst Golf Club offers a driving range and practice putting green. Inside the clubhouse is a well-stocked golf shop as well as Mulligans 1909, the facility?s restaurant. The menu includes breakfast sandwiches, appetizers, and lunch favorites, like fish and chips.
